  • Access points, routers, bridges, and combination devices
  • OS/2 hardware support on the client side, including the current state of device driver development
  • Planning a wireless LAN (WLAN) or WLAN segment
  • Completing the initial hardware setup
  • Wireless security, including WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) & newer strategies
  • Upgrading an 802.11b WLAN to 802.11g, including performance considerations in mixed environments
  • Questions & answers

Speaker Info

  • Lewis Rosenthal has been active professionally in the IT field since 1987. His experience with OS/2 dates back to version 2.0, which became the first OS/2 workstation OS rolled out in his accounting & systems integration firm of Rosenthal & Rosenthal. His experience with NetWare began in 1990, with NetWare 2.15c, and continues today, with NetWare 6. He earned his CNA on NetWare 4.11 in 1998.

Rosenthal & Rosenthal's IT practice consists mainly of small NetWare networks of five to thirty stations, and encompasses a broad range of networking topologies and wide area networking technologies. The firm specializes in connecting OS/2, Windows NT/2000, and Linux clients to NetWare networks.

As the maintainer of the OS/2 Wireless Networking mailing list & as an IT consultant, I've not only had some useful experience planning, implementing, and maintaining wireless LANs and LAN segments, but I also have had access to some very nowledgeable people in the area of OS/2 and wireless networking.

NET-02 : OS/2 and Novell integration

Topic Description

  • As Novell has discontinued development of the OS/2 NetWare Requester while moving forward with newer releases of the NetWare operating system, something of a "how-to" void has been created among users of both of these systems. This presentation shall attempt to address many of the concerns users and administrators have when dealing with the two operating systems on the same wire.

    Topics to be addressed include:

    • Current state of the OS/2 NetWare Requester, including an overview of the latest patches available
    • Installation & configuration of the requester on an OS/2 or eCS workstation, with an eye toward
      potential traps & pitfalls
    • Techniques for automatic & semi-automatic login
    • Survey of OS/2 functionality under different versions of NetWare from 3.12 through 6.0
    • Managing NetWare servers from OS/2 stations: what's possible & what isn't
    • Printing under NetWare
    • Workstation backup options in a NetWare environment
    • Newer NetWare client functionality under OS/2 (iPrint, iFolder, etc.): what works? how?
    • Support options

Where to find help with your connection and make it OS/2 friendly. How to protect your family's PC's (Windows and OS/2). How to tweak ecs/OS/2's TCPIP settings using inetcfg.ini for better throughput. SLPR/LPR for sharing printers and hardware print servers will also be covered.

  • Stan Sidlov has been hanging around OS/2 forums since the early 90's. He has worked with or used every version of OS/2 since 1.3EE. Tapped back in 1998 for Warpstock's Event Chair because he was too helpful on Compuserve for too many years, he did repeat duty in 2000. Stan has been on the Warpstock Board since 1999 and currently has been serving a life sentence as it's Treasurer. A trained programmer and project manager for IBM Midrange shops since the early 80's, he has worked for a number of bank and financial institutions over the years, and is currently looking for new work.

NET-04 : Networking with OS/2

  • Jose Rodriguez is a free lance technical writer (or a tech contractor at times offering system administration services in heterogeneous environments). He is currently working for a Silicon Valley company. Additionally, although not a kid anymore, he is currently pursuing a PhD in mathematics (and has dabbled in philosophy and computer science on a regular basis) at San Jose State University. He became acquainted with OS/2 around 1995 after he became aware of the limitations of Windows. Since then, he has installed versions 2.11 up to Aurora (4.5) in laptops as well as workstations (both single and dual processors).
