USR-01 OS/2 Device Drivers News Oliver Stein

This presentation gives an update about the current Device Driver situation and shows some new developments in this area, e.g. USB, Infrared, Bluetooth, IDE, PCMCIA, etc. A demonstration of a few new devices with OS/2 support is also planned.

OS/2 was "the integration platform" before IBM decided it wouldn't support Windows 95 applications. The Odin project, started in 1997, aims to fill this gap. Odin has advanced to a point where it is becoming very useful. This presentation gives an overview of the Odin project, its architecture, its strategy for now and the future -- and an amazing demonstration of what the technology is already doing for home users and enterprises.

While far from complete, Warpzilla, the next-generation browser/editor/mailnews client, is already available for intrepid users willing to try preview software. This presentation will focus on what's new in Warpzilla and how it differs from its predecessors from the user's standpoint. It will address issues such as: How do users benefit from its being an open-source project? What is IBM's involvement with Mozilla? What new features does it include? What web standards does it support? What are skins? How does one select among the various distributions available?

USR-07 The OS/2 Community - Where Do We Want to Go Today? Larry B. Finkelstein

A panel of representatives of different parts of the OS/2 community hosts the keynote Roundtable Discussion; a session with a strong emphasis on audience participation. Today, the OS/2 community has a number of available support mechanisms in place. With the audience actively participating in the discussion, the panel looks for a cooperative approach to OS/2 Support, where everyones favorite method of accessing the support mechanisms will be available. The panel realizes there is still a lot of room for improvement in the "cooperation" area, and your participation in the discussion will be very helpful in mapping out the direction that we will eventually take.

 

USR-08 MP3s - what they are and what you can do with them Samuel Audet

This presentation will first explain the way MP3 functions, ie.: how sound compression in general works. Next, the uses for MP3 will be listed and explained. The MP3 phenomenon will also be looked at, the reasons why MP3 became so popular and how it happened. Finally, the presentation will look at programs available on the OS/2 platform to work with MP3s.
